Spring Fling
After writing and shooting for some lesser newspapers in Oklahoma, I wound up chief photographer for a nascent (now defunct) publication called Oklahoma Monthly. A rag-tag operation, everybody did a little of anything they could -- downright exhilarating, really.
Like this ridiculous cover, shot at the art director's insistence, killing 7 hours and a case of Polaroids to balance four separate exposures. Pre-Photoshop, of course, so the swoopy lettering had to be done by moving a neon sign in total darkness.
By the way, that's the art director you can't see, dressed in total black like some wine-and-brie-crazed Ninja, waving the neon. Like I said, exhilarating stuff.
But lunatic enough to nudge me into a Computer Science degree. Fortunately, the Internet now offers me a way to do both -- shoot and compute. If you need either, drop me a line...
The art director turned me loose on this one, so both photos are my ideas. Think "budget" -- the Monthly was sinking fast, and a cover paid $150 including expenses.
Even so, this "halo" shot in the Capitol rotunda is a personal favorite. Senator Stipe, I must confess, was never fully apprised of the concept...
